The guide

Herbal Shower Steamers

Shower steamers are small, fizzing tablets placed on the floor of your shower where water activates them and releases fragrant steam. They are not bath bombs - they are not meant to sit in water. The result is an aromatic shower experience, something like a steam room with a herbal touch.

Note: These are aromatic/sensory products. They are not therapeutic devices and make no health claims.

What you need

  • 1 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 2-3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2-3 teaspoons water (add carefully)
  • 20-30 drops essential oil of your choice (lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, or a blend)
  • Dried herb flowers or petals for decoration (optional - calendula, lavender buds, chamomile flowers)
  • Silicone mold or muffin tin lined with paper cups
  • Gloves (citric acid can dry skin)

Steps

  1. Combine dry ingredients. In a bowl, whisk together baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch until evenly mixed.
  2. Add essential oils. Add your chosen essential oils and stir quickly. The mixture may fizz slightly - this is normal.
  3. Add water very slowly. This is the tricky part. Add water a few drops at a time, stirring constantly. You want the mixture to clump together when pressed without activating the fizz. If it fizzes a lot, you have added too much at once - work faster. The texture should be like damp sand.
  4. Press into molds. Pack the mixture firmly into silicone molds or paper-lined muffin cups. Press in any decorative dried herb flowers on top.
  5. Let dry. Leave uncovered at room temperature for 24-48 hours until fully hardened. Do not try to rush this in a humid bathroom.
  6. Unmold carefully. Pop out gently and store in a dry, airtight container.

To use

Place one steamer on the floor of your shower, away from the direct stream but where it will get some water splash. The steamer activates gradually and releases fragrance throughout your shower.

Shelf life

Shower steamers keep for 3-6 months in a sealed, dry container. Humidity is their main enemy.

Safety note: Do not use these in a bath - concentrated citric acid in bath water can be irritating. Keep away from eyes. If you have sensitive skin, test a small amount before using regularly.
